Kozan I invented a new style to replace the gold painting, in which he represented common animals and plants though meticulous sculpture, This Plastic decoration epitomised the early style of Makuzu ware until Meiji 4th year (1881). Makuzu ware was first presented in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Adorned with plastic lotuses, crabs, snakes and mice, the vases and censers of Makuzu received great acclaim, gaining the bronze medal in the decorative ceramic division. This great success led to worldwide fame for Makuzu ware, and thereafter the majority of the works were exported.
