In the early stage of Ota Kiln
[ca. 1871(meiji 4) - ca. 1875(meiji 8)]
After building his kiln in the village of Ota, Miyagawa Kozan I started creating ceramic works painted with gold over glaze. They were also commonly produced in Kyoto and Satsuma, and were highly sought after by merchants. Those works were not exactly something on which Kozan I could display his real abilities. He was also concerned that the export of these works could result in a sizeable loss of gold from his country, since it consumed a large amount of it in paintings.
